Cycling Heals - Vets Connect Monthly Outing - this outing is hosted on the second Tuesday of every month at Salem Lake in Winston-Salem. Please be prepared for weather conditions; the outings are hosted rain or shine.
Seven years ago, numerous wounded warriors/DVets have asked ONS to host cycling events. It’s not like hundreds of veterans have asked but if we can just get 30 -50 folks attending each month, that a lot of fellowship! Cycling isn’t cheap, and some veterans haven’t been on a bike in years.
Partnering with the National Cycling Center in Winston-Salem helps get all attendees back on bikes. The NCC provides loaner bikes and helmets for the day of the event for the attendees.
The National Cycling Center and ONS also accept new and used bike donations, which are reworked and given to wounded warriors/DVets to enjoy back in their respective communities. We aim to provide 20 - 30 quality bikes to wounded warriors/DVets annually.
The Salem Lake Cycling Heals - Vets Connect outings aren’t just about cycling; the seven-mile bike path is great for walking as well; and, you can jog if you like. But the day is about fellowship. Come walk your dog, feed the ducks, take the kids to the playground, and/or fish from the pier. You can just hang out in the community center, too if you like.
The monthly outings were originally planned for wounded warriors/DVets; but we have expanded the event to include all veterans and the general public too – EVERYONE is welcome to attend! Supporters of the monthly outing want to help put cycling back in the lives of wounded warriors/DVets. Again, the outings are hosted rain or shine; snacks and beverages are provided; Hot Coffee is served; and come make new friends and get that heart rate up cycling, walking, chasing kids in the playground, etc. Salem Lake is a great venue, and its staff is very friendly and helpful!
